Richard Fox seeks election to California’s 18th Congressional District
Libertarian Republican and physician Richard Fox, is running against Congresswoman Anna Eshoo in this upcoming 2014 election.
Fox is running for congressional office for the first time, with the desire to reform health care and the Affordable Care Act. He has been a practicing pediatrician for more than 35 years and has a medical office in Los Gatos, where he currently resides.
“As a physician, I became concerned about the health care reform issue because, in my view, the Affordable Care Act represents an increase in the amount of regulation of health care and also the cost of health care,” Fox said.
He explained that the vast majority of patients who had to change insurance policies experienced increased premiums.
Much of these price hikes have to do with more regulations that have to be complied with, Fox said.
As a Libertarian, he believes that too much government intervention and involvement hurts ordinary people, and that health care could be reformed in such a way that it is less highly regulated and more affordable for everyone.
Dr. Fox releases a position statement on the recent unrest in Hong Kong:
As a Libertarian-Republican, I support the recent efforts of the citizens of Hong Kong to decide for themselves how they should be governed. I would condemn any use of force by the Chinese government against unarmed, peaceful protesters, such as happened in 1989 in Tiananmen square.
In 1987, in one of the finest hours of the American Presidency, President Reagan journeyed to Berlin to stand in the shadow of the Berlin Wall to politely but firmly demand, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” Two years later, in 1989, the Berlin Wall, which had stood as the ugly embodiment of the imprisonment of millions of Eastern Europeans since 1961, through six U.S. presidencies, came crashing down. This happened without firing a shot when Eastern Europeans decided to throw off their Soviet masters, inspired by President Reagan’s standing up for them and their freedom. Such is the power of the American vision of democracy and freedom for peoples around the world, articulated with firmness and passion.
President Obama should make a similar firm and unequivocal call for democracy and freedom in Hong Kong. It is the right thing to do and what the world expects of America. It not America, who else should we expect to stand for freedom and democracy around the world?
We should be clear to repressive regimes around the world that they cannot enjoy the benefits of trade, banking, and travel within the democracies of the world if they abuse their citizens at home for unarmed, peaceful protest. For America to look the other way in the face of such abuses only encourages more abuse. It also betrays our own values and diminishes us in our own eyes and the eyes of the world.
Richard B. Fox's Statement for the Official Voter Guide For California District 18 Election, November 4, 2014!
Smaller government promotes more and better jobs, better and more affordable healthcare, school choice, and personal privacy.
Cut Government To Grow Jobs
The Democrats’ big spending “stimulus” programs have failed to end the recession and revive the economy. We have millions on unemployment and food stamps and trillions in debt left to the young, stuck living with parents, unable to start their own families. Get rid of wasteful Democrat spending programs to end poverty and restore prosperity the right way, with productive, dignified, private sector jobs.
Free Market Healthcare, Not Expensive Mandates
Replace wasteful mandated government health plans with truly affordable free market health plans that fit families’ needs and budgets.
School Choice, No SCA5
Children should have tax credits to attend the quality schools that their parents choose for them, whether public, charter, home, or online. Then, there will be no need for educational discrimination under SCA5.
Keep the government out of our cell phones, emails, text messages, and personal decisions, such as our reproductive choices and gender identities.
Restore Fading Dreams
Save our hopes and dreams for our families by cutting government and unleashing the power of free markets to open up opportunity and prosperity for all. A strong economy supports good schools, safe streets, and gives families a future. Vote for Dr. Fox, a trusted children’s doctor, always thinking about our kids and what kind of world they will grow up in. We can and must give them a better one.

Free Speech, Our Most Important Right
When people in other countries are asked what they most admire about America, it is our freedom of speech, not our material wealth that is most often mentioned. In fact, our freedom to explore new ideas and question old ones is one of the most important factors in our material wealth because that is the only way that progress is made. It is also the main reason why China will never exceed America until it has free speech. Until then, all China can do is copy our technologies and our business methods but it can never pass us up.
Thus, Libertarian Republicans like myself believe strongly in free markets, and not just in the economic marketplace but even more in the free market for ideas. Free markets are essential to our progress, both in economic terms and also as a free, just, and fair people.
Free speech is vital for our political discourse because it provides the means by which we deal with our differences of opinion. Free speech is now, as always, threatened by those who do not wish to resolve differences of opinion on their merits but by suppressing differing views. Such suppression can take the form of arresting those who would speak out, by closing off the channels of communication, or by forbidding dissenters from assembling to share their views.
The VA Hospital System Scandal and How to Reform It With Choice and Competition
The VA hospital scandal, where veterans are suffering and dying because that government-run health care system delays and denies their treatment and covers it up to boot, is Exhibit A in my congressional campaign to replace government-run health care with private, free-market health care.
On June 9, the VA released its own audit of its hospitals reporting that the average waiting time for a new primary care patient appointment at the Palo Alto VA hospital for this area was forty-two days.
My first question about this is, why do veterans from all over the area have to go all the way to Palo Alto to see a doctor for routine primary care? Why don’t they have the choice of just going to a local doctor? I thought that the point of having the VA hospitals was that they have special expertise in treating the unique needs of the veteran population, like traumatic and psychological injuries resulting from combat, not routine problems like diabetes and hypertension that can be treated locally.

Electronic Privacy, NSA Abuses, and Amnesty for Snowden
Private personal communications should be protected against government snooping unless the government first obtains a search warrant from a judge. The Fourth Amendment has traditionally prevented the government from reading our mail or listening in on our telephone conversations without a warrant. The same protections should apply to our electronic communications, be they on our cell phones or our emails or our text messages.
Unlimited government snooping in our personal communications has been justified as necessary to fight terrorism because, it is argued, we cannot afford any delay in our pursuit of terrorists. But, every court has a judge available 24/7 to consider warrant requests. We should not give up our constitutional rights on the pretext of fighting terrorism. We should not have to give up our freedom in order to defend it.
U.S. citizens have a constitutional right to travel unhindered among the states. However, in recent years, our citizens have been subjected to increasingly intrusive and demeaning, sometimes invasive, searches when they wish to travel, especially by air.
Dr. Fox Wins Spot on November Ballot!
Richard Fox, Los Gatos pediatrician and healthcare attorney running as a Libertarian Republican, finished second behind incumbent Democrat Anna Eshoo in the June 3 primary election for California's 18th Congressional District seat, earning him a spot on the November General Election.
Fox commented that, “This election shows that more and more voters are turning away from the Democrats’ failed politics of big government with its suffocating regulations and taxes, envy, redistribution and class warfare, where the only people prospering are the super-wealthy, politically connected crony capitalists. Instead, they are turning to smaller government with free markets that allow the economy to prosper once again, creating growth and opportunity for all Americans, not just the political class and their patrons. I wish to thank all of my supporters and contributors and we look forward to the coming campaign so that we can give the voters of Silicon Valley the chance to replace stagnation with growth and opportunity for all.”
